Dear Phyllis,
Here is your Miss Rosie (Star Dust Dream and Sam 1-10-14). She is a delight.
She loves the water - with the mud and without.
Miss Rosie insists on walking three miles a day - we are on our second pair of tennis shoes. She has a chocolate lab that she plays with during our walk.
And yes she is a great Retriever!
Miss Rosie takes Glycoflex 2 and Missing Link (with yogurt) everyday.
Your girl is well taken care of.

Happy Holidays,
Will

Subj: Spay Question

Hello,
Last year we picked up a yellow female pup from the Gypsy X Trip litter. We have been holding off having her spayed until after her first heat. She is now almost 18 months old and so far we have not had a noticeable heat.
My question is, should we proceed with having her spayed or should we wait until she has a noticeable heat?
I also want to add, she is a super great dog. We also have an 11 year old female from the Mardy X Elvis little. They get along great even though the young one, Lucy, can be a bit of a pest every now and then.
She is all muscle and had a great toy drive. My plan is to train her for search and rescue work and she is doing very well with that as well. She already has her K9 Good Citizen Certification which she received over two months ago. Below is a picture of the two taken last winter.

Subj: Toller again with smaller pictures

I wanted to give you a progress report on Toller (from Poncho and Busy's January, 2014 litter). She is truly a wonderful puppy and growing into a beautiful dog! She gets compliments whenever we have her out. She is very sweet and gentle around the house, and travels extremely well. We drove from western NC to Alaska when she was 5 months old. Amazing how well she did! Training is very hard on the road, so we were glad to get to AK where we had good training areas and local friends who train hunting dogs.
Toller picture 2

We hunted in mid-September with friend Tom at his cabin on the Susitna Flats. The weather didn't cooperate and there weren't many birds in the area, but we managed to bag a few. This was where Toller's incredible instincts showed up. At only 8 months old, she had NO QUIT in her! She made 4 retrieves (all of my birds) in some fairly difficult conditions. She uses her nose really well and found a cripple I would have missed. We were thrilled at how well she did from beginning to end. She handled well in the float plane and the canoe...both experiences were firsts for her on this trip.

We returned to western NC this fall and I began her upland bird training. She has quite a ways to go, but is making good progress. Once again, she has demonstrated tremendous instincts and heart and really loves to hunt for grouse.

Thank you for a puppy that is fantastic in every respect!

Hi Phyllis,
Just wanted to drop you a quick note of thanks for Kaos, the pup you picked for us from the Hatter/Russell June of '13 litter. I couldn't be more pleased with her. She immediately became a big part of our family. She took to training with ease. A good family pet was the priority...she definitely fits that bill. This years recent pheasant season has without a doubt been one of my best ever with her. Her natural drive, as well as training, has made her without a doubt the best gun dog I have ever owned. Can't wait for deer season to end so we can get back out there for the second season.

Subj: A Thank you

Dear Phyllis and Jack,
You won’t remember me or my dog I am sure, as I "adopted" him from you in 2000. "Angus", which is the name I gave him, was born January 11, 2000 in litter SN701869/07 Silverbrook Return to Sender and Deep Run Magnolia. He came to me April 8. He only returned to you a few times for boarding and training, as he was with me 24/7 most of the next nearly 15 years. He died Friday here at home. He was an incredible dog and wonderful companion. While he did get field training (we spent two hours a day working with him for a while), he never competed (nor was he bred), but he was among the smartest and kindest dogs we’ve known, and he became a fixture here in Old Town Alexandria. He was one of those dogs who affected all who met him (we are getting calls and notes from all over), and I certainly feel he made me better for having him in my life. I can’t begin to describe how much we loved him and how he affected so many aspects of our lives.

I wanted to thank you for introducing us to him, and for the start of a wonderful 15 years. He was “with it” to the end, and even was managing 1 – 2 miles of walks until just a few days ago. He had a bout with soft cell sarcoma a year ago, and the usual arthritis, but he was a happy dog and engaged. He was my joy, and I shall miss him deeply.

Thank you,
Elizabeth

Subj: Wyatt Holliday from Casablanca x Lacrosse

Dear Deep Run,
I wanted to touch base with you folks and let you know how the most perfect dog in the world is doing. Wyatt Holliday born 4/21/2014 is certainly everything I could ever want. Wyatt continues to be the most loving pup I have ever known. He truly is a blessing. His extended family (nanna, aunts, uncles, and cousins) visit us (Wyatt) more than ever before. His nickname in the family is heartbreaker because he is just that sweet. I've included some pictures. Please feel free to share all or part of this email. I certainly can't thank you guys enough for the joy that he brings me and my family. If I ever get a bigger house we will be back for a playmate.
Oh yeah I should also mention he slept through the night from day one, only had three messes in the house, doesn't care to chew on anything other than his huge assortment of toys, loves the car, loves the beach, loves the boat, loves his crate, and loves loves loves people. See Wyatt picture 2.
By the way if you ever want to see a dog tip toe come see Wyatt when the grass is wet and its time to pee.
Lastly - I know I was a bit of a pain leading up to getting Wyatt. I was anxious and nervous. Thanks for being patient with me. The Lord truly has blessed me with an exceptional companion.

Hi Phyllis et al;

Wanted you to know that Zeeva (Sam x Piper 4/15/14) won her first blue ribbon today at our local field trial in the puppy class. Everyone was so amazed how well she hunted and were awed by her beauty and thick curly coat. Several people asked where we'd gotten her. She is also the star of her obedience class. We can't thank you enough for giving her such an amazing start!

Just wanted to send you all a few pics of Major Mac living it up. He is 6 months old and a perfect puppy. Loves water! We are wondering how we are going to cover the pool for winter now. He went in 4 times today and it was between 48 and 60 degrees. So good and totally housebroken when we brought him home. I can count on one hand the number of accidents he has had and they have all been our fault. What a beautiful puppy, we could not have asked for more. Thank you all - keep up the good work.

Hi Phyllis,
I just wanted to give you an update on our puppy, Gumbo (Chief x Beyoncé). He is absolutely the most wonderful dog we've ever had. He is beautiful, sweet, smart and so agreeable. He also loves to swim and retrieve. He will be professionally trained for hunting, but mostly he is our most delightful house dog. Our children adore him, and he's actually had a really positive influence on our crazy English Setter!
Our vet was extremely impressed not only by Gumbo himself, but also by the level of care and information provided by Deep Run. We are in the Pacific Northwest (Portland, OR), and have friends who say they now want a pup from Deep Run! I believe (hope!) we will always have at least one of your dogs in our family. They are just so beautifully bred.

Subj: Puppy Update - Sam x Calypso Litter

Hi Jack and Phyllis,
I wanted to start off for saying thanks for running such a great farm! I was nervous about picking up our new puppy but Jack put us (well more so me than my boyfriend, Nick) right at ease. After getting Macon, Jack showed us some training techniques and much to my boyfriend’s pleasure got a pigeon out to show off Macon’s retrieving skills. We almost left with two new pets that day but figured the pigeon wouldn’t make it home with Macon in the car. I wanted to write in and give an update on Macon (Sam & Calypso Litter). She is doing great and is growing fast! She loves to swim and gets along great with any dog especially her two cousins, who also came from Deep Run. She will be going duck hunting soon and has been getting prepped by Nick. Macon has such a great demeanor and is one of the calmest puppies! She is the new official office dog and comes to work with me a few times a week in the afternoons. My boyfriend and I can’t express how thankful we are to have her in our lives. She is such an amazing dog! Attached are some photos of her playing and also a photo of three generations from Deep Run!

Phyllis, Jack,
I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to update you on one of your puppies that has brought great happiness to our family. Jager has been an incredible family dog and is truly my daughter's best friend. They are constant companions, even sitting under her desk while she studies. This alone would be more than enough; however, on top of his affinity for my daughter, he has proven to be an exceedingly good hunting companion for both of us. He does very well finding ring necks and proved invaluable during last seasons waterfowl migration. To top it all off, a few years ago, Jager completed his Junior Hunt certification! We are now working on training to run in the Senior series.
Now we are looking for another dog to add to our family. While browsing your site, I noticed you had a puppy from the Poncho x Busy litter born in January. We would like another hunting dog to pair with Jager and our family. Is he still available?
Finally, have you ever considered breeding one of the dogs you sold. Jager has proven to be an extremely good hunting dog and family companion. I would love to see his blood line continued.
Here is a picture of Jager and his ducks.

v/r,
John

I have been meaning to send you an update on our pup Goose (from the Jan rugby and Glow litter). His first few days at home were chilly ones with a good few inches of snow on the ground but he was in his element. Hi Deeprun - I wanted to send you an update on Zeus our 4 month old.
He's done with all his shots and he is very healthy. He's thrilled he can now go on walks through our development now that he's fully inoculated. All his other paperwork has been taken care of (chip, akc etc) as well.
His crate and potty training are going along just super. He's wonderful in the crate and is for the most part completely house trained. He sits by the door when he needs to be let out for a break. He's a smart boy.
He and his older brother Gus (8yr old Deeprun pup) play all the time. He's brought back the younger dog in him.
His human 2 yr old sister just adores him and he is very good with her. Everyone who meets him just thinks he's a beautiful lab and so do we! Thank you for such a wonderful puppy.

Take care,

Hello Phyllis,
I thought I would follow up with you on our new Pup Deep Run Woody! He arrived on time Tuesday at 715 PM. He was so good, not even crying. We brought our Winnie (Sam/Piper) with us to the airport and let them meet by the car and have some food and water before we drove home. We were all set up for Woody with an X-Pen, toys, food water, etc. We let him stay up until about 11 and crated him in our room with Winnie (also crates at night) and he slept through till we got up (430 AM as is routine). Amazing! He had his first Vet appt yesterday and the Dr. said he is in excellent condition and praised your Kennel's paperwork and program. .... I registered his chip and sent in the AKC registration as well.
I have to say that Woody is such a good dog! He has NO attitude (unlike a certain female we know named Winnie haha) and he wants to please and obey. I am truly amazed. He is so smart-in addition to potty training we are also working on sit, come, leave it, AH (no), and of course Good Dog! Deb says he looks like a Bat with his wrinkly face and wide eyes-although that's funny, I told her to stop saying that! Haha! We are in love to be sure.

Thanks Phyllis,
Gary

Subject: Greetings from Arlington

Kristi and Phyllis,

We made it home to Arlington with our Joe and Magic puppy. We decided to name her Coco - spelled like Coco Chanel as our oldest, 8, thought she should have a sophisticated name. She was great in the car - some whimpering at first but fell asleep most of the way. Again we apologize for being late, we underestimated Saturday traffic in our route.
We were able to get Coco to learn to be comfortable in our backyard and since then the housebreaking has been a success. She had one runny stool but I switched her to bottled water and she seems fine.
She loves the snow we still have on the ground and has had fun making puppy angels already.
We are very excited and appreciate all of your efforts in caring for her and starting her with some good training.

Best,
Robyn

Hi Phylis,

Sorry for the slow response. I’ve wanted to send you some pictures of Pepper and tell you how he’s doing. First picture attached, more to follow.
He is such an amazing dog. I’ve trained three before but this puppy is so expressive and alert and calm yet he shows a lot of what we call “try” in Montana; he runs hard. He’s very easy to “read” and very trainable. His instincts are to look to me which makes life so easy. He’s very confident around noises which surprises me (unless you have a lot of farm equipment). I could go on and on but he’s very special. You have done a wonderful job. Now I’ve got to take advantage of that.

Kind regards,
Jason

Subj: Sara - Pancho x Fly 7/28/2012

Hello Phyllis,
Just an update and another "How do you do it?" with these truly AMAZING pups. You probably don't remember, but I wanted a pup to compete in agility and share my addiction for this fun sport. At the time there were a couple litters coming up, but you suggested the Pancho x Fly litter. Boy did you nail it!!! Sara LOVES agility. These pups truly live to work don't they? I know the kind of "work" I chose for her is not important, she just loves to work. At the agility start line she gives an excited little whine every time I put her in a sit-stay. Her tail is wagging the entire time she is on course, and she is soooo fast! People watching actually gasp when she is running. With my instructor, we have had to come up with a different strategy for her training. Unlike most dogs, where the goal is to rev them up and get them excited to speed them up, with Sara she is already so over the top excited that I have to avoid excited cheering and use a calm, "good girl" to settle her down. Her reward is she gets to continue taking obstacles, to her that is better than stopping the action for a treat! I have resisted the temptation with such a talented and driven pup, to push too hard, I want above all else for this love of the sport to stay with her, so have only entered her in 2 trials so far, yet in those 2 trials she earned 4 firsts, a second, third and fourth. Most importantly, she had so much fun!!!!!!! Everyone commented on her love of the game, she can't wait to get in the ring, and once there, is just totally focused, all she wants is to know where to go next. She never wanders or runs around saying hello to ring crew and judges, like many beginner dogs do. Her first trial was outdoors, on a brisk autumn day with a cool breeze, leaves blowing and lots of exciting new smells, but she was 100% focused in each class, I was so proud of her. Her next trial was indoors at an equestrian facility. My older, experienced dog blew me off to go sniffing horse smells, but Sara once again comes into the ring with nothing but agility on her mind. All she wants to know is "which obstacle do I take next". What a blast she is to train and compete with. Her third trial is coming up next weekend, and I just love competing with her, I'll try to get a picture or better yet, a video to send you of her in action. You should see her weave poles, my instructor says she has never seen a natural weaver before, but Sara is one, she caught on right away and FLIES though them. This pup can put a Border Collie to shame!
On a different note, what a sweetheart she is in the house! She is such a sweet little cuddlebug. You mentioned Pancho has that "off switch", that he is calm in the house and kennel, yet a fireball in the field. This is Sara too! She is certainly still a puppy, but what beautiful manners, she is polite, has wonderful social skills, and really just wants so badly just to please. I have had Labs all my life, and every one has been wonderful, but there has been something special about this pup from the very first day I picked her up there at Deep Run Farm, she has been so incredibly EASY to train anything and everything. Thank you sooooo much for all you do to breed and raise these exceptional dogs!
